TEACHERS ARE LIKE ROADS...

Morning Assembly of a school is an extremely important time. Students and teachers are in the receptive mode. Among various items presented in it is: the thought for the day. Sometimes the thoughts are really thought provoking. One day a primary class student presented a thought. He said,” Teachers are like roads. They take us to our destinations.”

In the beginning I thought it to be an ordinary thought. But then in my mind I started visualizing roads. I started thinking of roads which are narrow and the others which are wide. I also imagined bumpy roads with pot holes in them. I thought of roads which are super highways.

During my service as a teacher for almost 15 years and then as a Principal for 16 years I must have interacted with thousands of teachers. I started finding similarities between the roads I visualized above and my teacher colleagues.

I felt that all of my colleagues were not super highways but some of them surely were. They raised the inspiration level of their students up to skies. They answered their queries and made them curious to learn. They always moved to their classrooms with adequate preparedness. And all those students who were taught by such teachers are very positively contributing to the development of our nation.

 But there were some who were like narrow and bumpy roads. They did not prepare their lessons well. They did not ensure the achievement of age appropriate learning outcomes. They did not know their subjects well. At times they humiliated the students and earned their hatred. Those students  who had the luck to move on such roads could not reach their destinations.

In the same Morning Assembly I motivated my teachers to become super highways on which our students should experience smooth drive towards their destinations.
